Rain Dance

To most, the seagull is a bothersome, noisy bird that doesn’t have a lot of endearing qualities. However if you take the time to watch them, they can be just as fascinating as some of our favourite garden birds and there’s certainly no denying their intelligence!

Below are some images and footage of a herring gulls performing a ‘rain dance’, rhythmically tapping their feet on the ground in a frenzied dance. (apologies for the video quality)

The purpose of this strange behaviour is to mimic the vibrations of falling rain and attract earthworms to the surface of the ground where they are within reach of the gulls.
