Sighting: Wheatear

A new bird sighting for me today and quite unexpected. A lovely morning in the harbour soaking up the sun was made all the more enjoyable by the arrival of a pair of these stunning Wheatears as they chased each other around the stationary boats.

These birds are related to robins and are summer migrants to the UK. They are often seen on pasture and moorland and it is likely this pair were just passing through as they made their way to feeding grounds.

This striking grey, black & orange individual is male.

The female is a more dull orange/brown colour ensuring she is camouflaged from predators whilst incubating eggs on her nest.
